CLOGSAG declares strike over alleged misconduct by Acting Registrar of Births and Deaths

Workers protest hostile work environment and unauthorised staff postings.

The Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), has declared a strike by staff of the Births and Deaths Registry, citing a hostile work environment under the Acting Registrar, Mr Samuel Adom Botchway.

The industrial action is scheduled to take effect from Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

In a statement, CLOGSAG accused Mr Botchway of overstepping his authority by reassigning and posting staff within the Civil and Local Government services without proper authorisation.

The association also described the workplace atmosphere under Mr Botchway’s leadership as “uncongenial,” alleging that he has verbally assaulted staff and frequently issued threats, thereby creating what it described as an “unsafe and intolerable” work environment.

“These actions have rendered the working environment unsafe and intolerable,” said CLOGSAG Executive Secretary, Mr Isaac Bampoe Addo.

This latest strike follows a similar nationwide action in March 2025 over the same concerns, which was later suspended after the Ministry of Labour assured the association of efforts to resolve the matter through dialogue.

However, CLOGSAG insists that little progress has been made since then and is therefore resuming industrial action to press home its demands.
