The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the Japanese Embassy in Ghana has shortlisted some 90 security personnel from 7 ECOWAS countries including Ghana for a yearlong training aimed at strengthening boarder control capacities against extremism and terrorism in West Africa and the Sahel.
The Training Programme is expected to be implemented by the Kofi Annan International peacekeeping and Training (KAIPTC) centre with some $370,000.00 funding from the Japanese Government.
Addressing the press at a ceremony to launch the training programme, UNDP Country Director, Dominic Sam, says because terrorism respects no boarders, a state of the art intelligence and cross boarder collaboration amongst security agencies is the sure way to deal with the dangers posed by phenomenon.
Charger d`affair of the Japanese Embassy, Shigeru Umetsu on his part indicated that the project is part of the Japanese commitment towards peace and stability in West Africa and beyond.
In Ghana, personnel from the Immigration, Police, Military and other Intelligence units will benefit from the training which seeks to improve the responses of member states within the context of rising radicalism, extremism and terror attacks orchestrated partly by domestic and transnational criminal networks in West Africa.
