A leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for severe punishment for the five persons arrested for forcibly removing the Krachi West District Chief Executive (DCE) from office.
Some irate supporters of the NPP in the Krachi West Constituency on Tuesday stormed the District Assembly office and chased out the DCE, Douglas Osei-Nti.
According to them, Mr Osei-Nti engages in acts that have made the governing party unpopular in the constituency, thus their intervention.
The police in the Volta Region said on Thursday they arrested five persons in connection with the incident.
The statement announcing their arrest said the law would not encourage the use of force by citizens to get their concerns addressed.
Speaking on the development on Morning Starr on Friday, Dr Fred Amankwah, a former NPP national chairman aspirant slammed the actions of the supporters as irresponsible.
He said they should be punitively dealt with.
“The people who sacked the DCE from office should be arrested and made to face the law. The legal process must come to its concluding end,” Dr Amankwah told Morning Starr host Francis Abban.
Member of Parliament for Tamale North Alhassan Suhuyini attributed the actions of the supporters to the heightening levels of “indiscipline” in the country under the Akufo-Addo administration.
“What we saw happen at Krachi West was as a result of indiscipline. In opposition and in government, some of the young people in the NPP think and feel they are above the law.
“The leadership that allowed the vigilante groups to believe they were part of the national security when they were in opposition, should make them know times have changed,” Suhuyini said on Morning Starr on Friday.
