Host of The Verdict on Starr FM, Isaac Addae, has described illicit drug trafficking in Ghana as a serious security and international issue, warning that the country must pay greater attention to the problem.
He said the prevalence of drug-related cases across different locations in the country should not be treated lightly, stressing that the issue could have consequences for Ghanaian citizens and the country’s international image.
According to him, the implications of drug-related offences can extend beyond individual cases, including possible difficulties for Ghanaians travelling internationally.
Mr Addae urged stakeholders to approach the issue with the seriousness it deserves and avoid allowing partisan politics to overshadow efforts to address the problem.
He noted that discussions about drug trafficking in Ghana often become politically charged, with the governing and opposition parties pointing to incidents that occurred under previous administrations.
Mr Addae said this political approach makes it difficult for the country to build a united response to what he considers a national concern.
He questioned when Ghana would be able to move beyond partisan considerations and establish a national dialogue aimed at tackling illicit drug trafficking.
The Verdict host stressed the need for a collective effort to change the narrative surrounding Ghana’s handling of drug-related offences and protect the country’s image internationally.
He further referenced recent drug-related arrests involving Ghanaians in other countries, as well as previous arrests linked to drug offences, arguing that the recurrence of such cases should prompt a more serious national response.
Mr Addae remained firm on this illicit drug issue, saying it should not be reduced to the usual political exchanges, particularly when the consequences could affect ordinary citizens and Ghana’s standing in the international community.
