Yilo Krobo District hospital has confirmed two deaths student and a parent, in the fatal crash involving Ben Konadu SDA Basic School on Adukrom -Somanya road.

Two victims in critical condition have been referred to Eastern Regional Hospital as condition of 20 others have been stabilized and the rest sent to other hospitals.

The Clinical Coordinator at the Yilo Krobo District Hospital, Dr. Grace Gadzekpo, explained that a total of 40 out of 65 victims were initially brought to the facility.

A bus transporting 65 schoolchildren and teachers on an excursion to Akosombo was involved in a fatal crash on Friday morning along the Adukrom-Somanya highway in the Eastern Region.

The victims from Ben Konadu SDA Basic School in Konongo -Odumase in Asante Akim central in Ashanti Region were aboard the bus with registration number GV 83-22.

The exact cause of the accident remains unknown, but eyewitnesses believe the driver may have been unfamiliar with the road and lost control while descending a sharp curve.

The Bus somersaulted many times before landed in a ditch.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, who was en route to an event at Mount Mary College of Education, stopped her convoy at the accident scene to assist in the rescue efforts. She followed up to Yilo Krobo district hospital, and provided food and drinks to the victims discharged.

Eastern Regional Director of Education Ivy Asantewa Owusu, coordinated effort from Ghana Education service Directorates to support the victims.

The accident scene has been notorious for fatal accidents due to the absence of adequate warning signs for drivers unfamiliar with the terrain.

Last year, a staff member of Koforidua SECTECH lost his life, and several others were injured when a bus transporting them to a funeral crashed at the same spot. The same year, two female teachers also died in an accident at the location.

Road Safety advocates are calling on Ghana Highway Authority to improve road safety measures to prevent further fatal crashes.
