One of Ghana’s veteran highlife musicians, George Darko credited with a number of hit songs is dead.

The death of the renowned highlife musician occurred on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 and the cause of his death is still unknown.

The family of the deceased is yet to make an official statement of his death.

His demise comes not long after another highlife legend, K.K Kabobo, on Thursday, March 14, 2024 at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).

Until his death, the late musician of Akoo Te Brofo fame was the Tufuhene of Akropong with the stool name, Nana Apem Darko I.

He was also guitarist, vocalist, composer and songwriter, who has been on the music scene since the late 1960s.
George Darko born on January 12, 1951 was popular in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, and his songs are some of the most timeless and enduring highlife tracks in Ghana’s music circles.

As a producer, composer and arranger, George Darko who has worked with a number of veteran highlife musicians, is widely considered to be one of the pioneers of burger-highlife with his first hit “Ako Te Brofo”.

Some of his contemporaries include Ben Brako, C.K. Mann, Daddy Lumba, Ernest Nana Acheampong, Nana Kwame Ampadu, Pat Thomas, among others.

The song remains popular among Ghanaians both at home and abroad, and is still played at funerals and parties across the country.
