President Akufo-Addo has disclosed that the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has secured a 500 Million dollar funding facility for the construction of new schools and for the renovation and expansion of the facilities in the existing schools.

Speaking at the Presbyterian Boys Secondary School, PRESEC’s 80th Anniversary Grand Durbar held at the school’s field under the theme; “Powerful Past, Prosperous Present and Prominent Future,” President Akuf- Addo said the government’s double track system which is currently being used to absorb the increased numbers as far as intake into Senior High School is concerned, will receive a great boost through the funding that has been secured.

“Through the innovative double track system, government has found a way to absorb the increased intake using the existing infrastructure. Furthermore, the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has secured a 500 million dollar facility for the construction of new schools and the expansion of infrastructure in existing ones to help cope with the rising numbers,” the President said.

Double Track System

The President, commenting further on his administration’s flagship programme, the double track system, emphasized that, “The double track system will not destroy the educational system of the country as the professional Jeremiahs would want you to believe.” He added that, “On the contrary, the system will reduce class sizes, it will increase contact hours between teachers and students as well as increase the number of holidays”.

Projects

President Akufo Addo as part if his participation at the durbar inspected and commissioned three projects that have been completed on the campus. The projects are a Visual Art Complex, an E-Library and the Appeadu House.

Ghana Education Trust Fund

The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) is a public trust set up by an Act of Parliament in the year 2000. Its core mandate is to provide funding to supplement government effort for the provision of educational infrastructure and facilities within the public sector from the pre-tertiary to the tertiary level.

In addition to infrastructural development, the GETFund also provides funding to support the procurement of educational equipment, and promotion of staff development and research, especially at the tertiary level. Some funding is also provided to support aspects of the work of agencies and institutions for which the Ministry of Education (MoE) has oversight and supervisory responsibility. In serving the public, the Fund appreciate that sharing information with its stakeholders in a timely manner is very important.

Using social media such as the blog and twitter, the Fund and its stakeholders are provided with real time opportunity to exchange ideas and views that will help us execute our mandate to the benefit of the broader Ghanaian society for whom, and on whose behalf we work. As a Public Trust, the GETFund is committed to faithfully and diligently serving its mandate.
