Ghana’s education system no longer inspires learners – GNACOPS Director

GNACOPS Executive Director calls for a holistic review of Ghana’s education system.

The National Executive Director of the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS), Obenfo Nana Kwesi Gyetuah, says Ghana’s education system is no longer sufficient for the needs of today’s learners.

Speaking to Isaac Addae on Morning Starr on Starr FM, Obenfo Nana Kwesi Gyetuah said the growing concerns over vandalism and chaotic behaviour among learners cannot be resolved solely through policing or disciplinary measures.

He argued that authorities must first acknowledge the disconnect between what the education system offers and what learners expect from it.

“To resolve this matter is not about the militants’ way, it’s not about caning, it’s not about anything. It’s about sitting down and admitting that the kind of education that these learners want is not what they’re enjoying.”

According to him, the education system must give learners a clear sense of purpose and help them understand why they are in school and what they hope to achieve from their education.

He said previous generations, although they were sometimes stubborn while in school, had a clear destination that helped them restrain themselves and remain focused.

“We all were promised. I can tell you on the fact that all of us, when we were in school, one way or the other, we were stubborn. But what happened is that we were so much aware of a destination that we want to be, and that destination was so important to us.”

He said that sense of purpose is no longer sufficiently reflected in the current education system, making it necessary to reconsider what is being offered to young people.

Obenfo Nana Kwesi Gyetuah therefore called for a holistic assessment of the education system to determine whether it is providing the kind of education the younger generation needs.

“We need to holistically assess the kind of education system that we are giving to or turning out to the younger generation. And whether or not those generation, or this generation, is the kind of education system that they are looking for.”

He further said the education system must be able to psychologically help learners understand that their presence in school has a purpose and that their actions can either help or hinder their progress towards their desired destination.
