President John Dramani Mahama has raised fears over the quality and location of a resettlement project in Agavedzi, meant for victims of tidal waves.
During a visit to the area, Mahama described the project reportedly financed by Ghana Gas as poorly planned and unfit for its intended purpose.
“I don’t think the project was well thought through. The work is shoddy, and even the area where the resettlement is being built is a flood zone. If it floods, it will affect those buildings too, and so those buildings are not fit for purpose”, Mahama stated.
His visit followed a recent tidal wave disaster that displaced 300 people and affected 51 households. Addressing affected residents, Mahama stressed the need for immediate intervention, outlining a two-pronged approach: the commencement of phase two of the Berekusu Sea Defense Project and the proper resettlement of displaced families.
“There are two things we need to do: start the building of phase two of the defense wall, but at the same time, resettle those whose houses have been affected,” he emphasized.
Residents of Agavedzi have long endured the devastating impact of coastal erosion and tidal waves, with many calling for urgent government intervention to provide lasting solutions.
