Ghana took a giant step into the FIFA World Cup knockout stage after earning a hard-fought 0-0 draw against England in Group L on Tuesday night, extending their unbeaten start to the tournament and securing qualification for the Round of 32.
At the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, the Black Stars produced a disciplined defensive display to frustrate one of the tournament favourites. England dominated possession and territory for long spells, but Carlos Queiroz’s men remained compact and organized throughout.
The Three Lions came closest to breaking the deadlock late in the match when Nico O’Reilly struck the crossbar before Harry Kane failed to convert the rebound.
Ghana, meanwhile, looked dangerous on the counterattack through Antoine Semenyo and Prince Adu but could not find the decisive finish.
The result leaves Ghana level on four points with England after two matches. Later in the day, Croatia revived their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Panama, eliminating the Central Americans from the competition.
With four points already secured and Panama eliminated, Ghana are guaranteed at least a place among the tournament’s advancing teams, becoming one of the African nations to reach the Round of 32. England also remain in a strong position heading into the final round of matches.
The battle for top spot in Group L will now be settled on June 27 when Ghana face Croatia in Philadelphia while England take on Panama. A victory over Croatia could see the Black Stars finish top of the group and carry momentum into the knockout phase.
