Ghana’s para-athletes set off for South Africa ahead of 2026 Commonwealth Games

Team Ghana joins 2025 GAPS training camp in Stellenbosch as part of build-up to Glasgow 2026.

A determined team of Ghanaian para-athletes has left Accra for Stellenbosch, South Africa, to take part in the 2025 edition of the GAPS program, running from July 19 to 26.

This specialized training camp forms a key part of Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and represents an important investment in the country’s para-sports development.

Organized by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), the GAPS program which stands for Gather, Adjust, Prepare, Sustain is designed to support the growth of para-athletes and their coaches by providing advanced training, mentorship, and resources. The goal is to help participants perform at their best in elite international competitions.

This year’s Ghanaian contingent features some of the nation’s most exciting talents in para-sports. Among them is Zinabu Issah, a discus thrower in the F57 category, who recently won gold at the WPA Grand Prix in Marrakech this April a major milestone in her career.

Also on the team is Haruna Tahiru, a highly experienced competitor who has represented Ghana in Para Powerlifting (107kg+) and Arm Wrestling since 2017. Known for his strength and versatility, Haruna has earned multiple medals at both local and international levels.

The athletes will be guided throughout the week-long camp by seasoned coaches Prince Nyarko and Obeng Yaw Patrick, who bring technical expertise and deep experience to the team.

Ghana’s participation in the GAPS program has been made possible through the support of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), in collaboration with NPC-Ghana. Their ongoing partnership continues to strengthen the country’s commitment to para-sports — a key area of focus as Ghana eyes podium finishes in Glasgow 2026.

Taking part in the GAPS program not only enhances athlete readiness but also signals Ghana’s broader mission: to uplift athletes with disabilities, break down barriers, and ensure they are equipped to compete and succeed on the global stage.
