GIZ, Partners commission 24 mechanized boreholes in two regions

German Development Cooperation GIZ, Kasaproko, and Blue Skies have jointly commissioned 24 mechanized boreholes in the Eastern and Bono regions of the country.

The clean water projects located in underserved and deprived communities were constructed under the COVID-19 Comprehensive Pandemic Management for Employees, Families, and Communities to improve water scarcity and make the goods easily accessible to especially vulnerable populations.

According to the World Health Organisation( WHO), everyone has the right to sufficient, continuous, safe, acceptable, physically accessible, and affordable water for personal and domestic use.

In line with this humanitarian need, GIZ, Kasaproko, and Blue Skies provided water facilities to unlock benefits such as health, food and energy security, improved living standards, and education amongst others for the vulnerable communities.

Dr. Holger Till is the Team Lead, Develop Ghana, and underscored the essence of the initiative saying water is a critical element of human life that cannot be compromised.

“Today as we’ve all witnessed, there has been the commissioning of the projects to ensure that communities have access to clean and safe water. As we all know water is life, water is health, water is prosperity, water even is peace. Without water you cannot have a healthy population- if you don’t have a healthy population, you cannot have a productive population” he noted.

The residents of the OBOADAKA community of the Akuapen South District located in the Eastern Region where the symbolic commissioning for all other communities took place expressed gratitude to the donors for the project.

According to them, the facility affords them the opportunity of more hygienic and safe water as compared to the high iron content water they previously used.

“In this community, we have close to eight existing boreholes but the water is full of iron which makes it difficult to use. Up till now the best and most portable water we’ve ever had here is the one I’m standing before- we have used it several times and is good, it means a lot to us and we will safeguard it to last forever” Lord Akuffo the assembly member of Oboadaka expressed.

Two of the donors, Kasaproko and Blue Skies indicate local communities play vital and indispensable roles in their operations hence the need to embark on initiatives of this kind for continuous mutual benefits.

The collaborative effort by the partners highlights the theme of this year’s World Water Day which focuses on Water prosperity and peace.
