A student from Unity Hall at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is fighting for his life at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi after being stabbed during a violent incident at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) national “Thank You Tour” in the Ashanti Region.
The chaos erupted on Tuesday, April 29, shortly after a meeting at the Bantama Church of Pentecost, where Maxi, a well-known car dealer and staunch supporter of Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, allegedly threw money to a group of Unity Hall students who had come to support the former Member of Parliament for Assin Central.
According to eyewitnesses, a group of heavily built men popularly known as “machomen” arrived in a 2M Express Toyota vehicle and attempted to forcibly seize the cash.
In the process, warning shots were fired, and machetes were seen being brandished and dragged across the asphalt road, creating panic among bystanders.
During the commotion, a student was stabbed and left bleeding at the scene.
He was later rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for emergency care.
Shaibu Lasis, a member of Kennedy Agyapong’s team, EIB News Ashanti regional correspondent Isaac Justice Bediako that, “After the group stabbed the boy, they left him to die. We rushed him to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. As I speak, it is 9:45 p.m., and we are still here together with Ken ensuring he receives the best treatment.”
Another eyewitness pointed to former Manhyia South MP Collins Owusu Amankwah, along with Pope and Papa Yaw Asare Bediako a known NPP figure from Asokwa Constituency as key witnesses to the incident.
He added, “Any contrary account in the media is a sponsored attempt to discredit Kennedy Agyapong.”
Kwame Anim also questioned the presence of armed individuals at the tour event. “Why were machomen brought to a ‘Thank You’ tour? What was their motive? We know Ali Suraj, a known supporter of Dr. Bawumia, was behind this. It’s very unfortunate,” he lamented.
