Heavy rains that hit parts of Accra on Tuesday, June 3, 2026, have triggered severe flooding, disrupting communities and damaging property across Adenta, Pantang, Oyarifa and surrounding areas.
One of the most affected areas is the Oyarifa-Balansa stretch, where streetlight poles along the roadside shoulder were dragged onto the main highway by floodwaters.
The incident blocked sections of the road, forcing motorists to divert and causing significant traffic congestion.
Residents at Oyarifa-Balansa have raised concerns over what they describe as persistent drainage challenges in the area.
They allege that parts of the gutters have been blocked due to ongoing construction activities by an individual, which they believe worsened the flooding situation.
Residents also point to the small size of the main culvert as a contributing factor, arguing that it is unable to adequately channel rainwater during heavy downpours.
They are calling on the Municipal Assembly and relevant authorities to urgently intervene, warning that future rains could cause even more severe damage.
A resident recounted losing everything after floodwaters entered his room during the downpour.
He said all his belongings, including electrical appliances and household items, were destroyed as water filled his bedroom and left the entire space in ruins.
Floodwaters entered several homes, destroying property and leaving residents stranded as they struggled to salvage their belongings. Many described the situation as distressing, with some losing nearly all their possessions.
Parts of Accra, including areas around Makola, also experienced disruptions, with reports of fire outbreaks compounding the impact of the heavy rains.
Authorities are expected to assess the extent of the damage as residents continue to count their losses and call for urgent drainage interventions.
