The Ghana Police Service has dispatched a special team of intelligence officers and investigators to Gbenyiri in the Savannah Region after a series of reprisal attacks left several people dead and the community on edge.
The unit is working closely with the Savannah Regional Command to restore peace and bring the perpetrators to justice.
According to the police in a statement, calm has largely returned to the area, but security personnel remain on high alert as investigations continue.
ASP Richard Osei Yaw, staff officer for the Savannah Region, confirmed that the team’s presence is aimed at enhancing security and ensuring law enforcement can act swiftly.
The violence in Gbenyiri stems from ongoing tensions between some members of the Brifo and Fulani communities.
The latest clashes followed a robbery in the town that escalated into reprisal attacks, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries, including among vulnerable community members.
This is not the first time Gbenyiri has experienced communal violence. In recent years, disputes over land and grazing rights have occasionally erupted into conflict, displacing residents and creating humanitarian concerns.
Local authorities have been working to mediate between groups, but long-standing tensions have made the area prone to flare-ups.
The police are urging residents to remain calm and provide information that can assist in bringing all those responsible to justice.
Community leaders and local stakeholders have been called upon to cooperate with law enforcement to prevent further incidents and ensure lasting peace.
