The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) has enhanced the capacities of some 92 trainers in the security space on Preventing Violent Extremism, Radicalisation, and Small Arms Proliferation in the Sahel and adjoining Coastal Countries in West Africa.
Speaking at the Second Steering Committee Meeting and Project Closure, to reflect on the project and assess its impact, the Commandant of KAIPTC, Major General Richard Addo Gyane emphasized the importance of such projects and the need for collaboration amongst stakeholders in the sub-region in their cause to sustain peace and security.
“As we look forward to the future, let us remain committed to the cause of peace and security in the Sahel region and beyond. Let us build upon the successes of this project and continue to work together towards a safer and more prosperous West Africa,” he said.
On his part, the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Mochizuki Nisanobu, expressed the commitment of his country to ensuring peace and security in the region.
“Be assured of Japan’s continuous support and contribution to relevant initiatives that promote peace and security in the world,” he added.
The one-year project which spanned from March 2023 to March 2024 was implemented by KAIPTC, with support from the Government of Japan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The project sought to improve knowledge and information-sharing among security personnel and civil society actors in preventing and countering terrorism, violent extremism, and small arms proliferation, diversions, and trafficking in seven countries in West Africa including Benin, Togo, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso.
At the end of the project, some 92 participants made up of 22 women and 7) men from across seven countries in West Africa had their capacities enhanced through the project interventions.
