Political and Military leaders are set to later this month have series of engagements aimed at addressing the critical issues of migration and security in Africa.

The engagement forms part of the 3rd edition of the Kofi Annan Peace and Security Forum (KAPS Forum), which seeks to explore approaches to addressing migration-related conflicts through effective policies and peacebuilding mechanisms in the region.

Speaking at the launch of the Forum, Commandante of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Maj Gen Richard Addo Gyane emphasized the importance of collaboration in solving some of the germane problems on the continent.

“As political tremors shake continents, the world order transitions from a unipolar landscape to a multipolar one. This shift, coupled with recent crises in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, is pushing migration trends to new heights. Africa is faced with armed conflict which has created instability in countries like
Ethiopia, Mali, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, forcing people to flee their homes.”, he observed

“In launching KAPS 2024, we recognize the critical role of collaboration & engagement in addressing the complex issues of migration & security in Africa. Through KAPS, we aim to foster dialogue among political leaders, experts, & to forge solutions & collaborations that will contribute to building resilience & mitigating the adverse effects of migration in our ever-changing world order.”, he added.

On her part, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy, Sivine Jansen, urged diplomats and high-level leaders on the continent to explore alternative ways of addressing the insecurity issues on the continents.

This year’s KAPS Forum with theme, “Migration and Societal Resilience in a Multipolar World Order: Addressing Conflicts and Building Peace in Africa,” will be attended by former African Heads of State, government officials, high-level diplomats, and representatives from the United Nations, African Union, and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) including President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the African Union High
Representative for Silencing the Guns.

The KAPS forum 2024 to be hosted by the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) in Accra from February 27 – 28 and funded by the Governments of Norway and Germany, implemented through the German Technical Cooperation (GIZ) will feature broad thematic discussions on; Migration, sustainable development, conflicts, and societal resilience in the context of a multipolar world order; Key drivers of migration in Africa and their impact on conflicts and peace-building; Role of various stakeholders, including governments, international organizations, and CSOs, in addressing migration-related and climate-induced conflicts; and Strategies to enhance societal resilience and promote sustainable peace in Africa.
