The New Juaben South Municipal Assembly in Eastern Region has warned transport operators in Koforidua and its surrounding communities against charging unapproved fares, threatening sanctions against drivers who defy the directive.
Taxi drivers and Pragia Riders have added Ghc50p and for some instances Ghc1 to already existing fares whereas Mini buses have added Ghc5 citing recent rise in fuel prices and spare parts.
The Assembly says it has become aware of this development despite no official decision from Transport Unions and government.
In a press release dated August 12, 2026, the Assembly said it had consulted with transport unions and urged all commercial transport operators to comply with the existing arrangement and desist from charging fares that have not been approved.
The Assembly stressed that the directive takes immediate effect, warning that any transport operator found charging unapproved fares from Wednesday, August 12, 2026, will be sanctioned accordingly.
The move is intended to prevent arbitrary fare increases and protect commuters in Koforidua and its environs from unexpected increases in transportation costs.
The Assembly has therefore called on transport operators to adhere strictly to the agreed fares and cautioned commuters to report operators who violate the directive to the appropriate authorities.
