Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong, alongside representatives from the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Ghana Trades Union Congress, has extended condolences to Koforidua Secondary Technical School (SECTECH) following a fatal bus crash.

The accident, which occurred on Saturday morning, claimed the life of a kitchen staff member and left multiple others injured.

The bus, carrying about 50 staff members to Akwamufie for a colleague’s wife’s funeral, crashed after the driver lost control on a sharp curve on the Aseseeso to Somanya road.

Survivor Prince Appiah, a teacher, reported that the driver managed to prevent the bus from plunging into a deep hole after the front tyre burst which could have resulted in a more severe disaster.

On Monday morning, Minister Acheampong visited SECTECH to commiserate with the staff, students, and the bereaved family.

He also visited six victims still receiving treatment at the Eastern Regional Hospital.

“I am assured that we are in good hands. The team is up to the task. So they are out of the danger zone. That’s all our prayer, so they come back to join their families. Our prayer again is that it never happens to SECTECH again because this is so bad and it is so painful,” said the minister.

He added, “We pray that these times of clarity of weather, we are in the rainy season, and when you drive on the mountains, there is fog. So I want to take this as an opportunity to encourage and caution road users so that we are all cautious and defensive when we are driving.”

Regional Director of Education Mrs. Ivy Owusu Asantewaa stated, “Capacity-building programs are continuously held for drivers and other staff to minimize such accidents.”
