President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his strong stance on safeguarding press freedom, making it clear that he will never tolerate attacks on journalists in any form.
Speaking at the Presidential Media Encounter held at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, Mr. Mahama condemned the increasing cases of harassment against media practitioners, especially by security officers during public events.
“I have consistently condemned assaults on journalists. They are professionals doing their job—to inform, educate, and entertain the public,” the President stated.
He expressed worry over what he described as a disturbing “passion” among some security personnel to intimidate or assault journalists, stressing that such practices must be rooted out through education, disciplinary action, and stronger collaboration between the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the security services.
“It’s about sanctioning those who assault journalists. I’ve engaged the leadership of the GJA, and we’re working to bring them together with the security agencies so there can be continuous awareness creation. A journalist covering an event is doing a job just like the security officer—neither has the right to assault the other,” he emphasized.
President Mahama assured that his administration remains committed to creating a safe and enabling environment for media practitioners.
“As a lifetime member of the GJA, I can never condone the assault of journalists in any form,” he reaffirmed.
