Narawa Company Limited demands immediate intervention over armed takeover and alleged illegal mining on Fanteakwa concession

Armed intrusion, environmental damage, and a mining firm’s demand for state enforcement of the law.

Narawa Company Limited has issued an urgent public appeal to Ghanaian law enforcement and state security agencies, calling for immediate intervention to end what it describes as an ongoing armed occupation of its primary mining concession in the Fanteakwa District.

The head of Corporate Affairs and Official Spokesperson, Mrs. Doris Attoh, the company petitioned the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, the Minerals Commission, and the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) to restore state authority, protect lives, and remove unauthorized operators from the site.

According to the company, the intrusion began on August 12, 2026, when armed groups forcibly entered and took control of the concession. Narawa extended condolences to families affected by fatal violence linked to the takeover.

It also clarified that an incident on October 1, 2026, involving administrative staff conducting background checks for civil watch teams, occurred outside the operational zone to prioritise civilian safety.

The company said it is fully cooperating with investigators following preliminary law enforcement reviews of onsite personnel.

It however welcomed the recent arrest of three suspects and called for a thorough, objective examination of all forensic and physical evidence.

Narawa maintains that it holds valid possessory rights under active High Court provisional orders, including a key order sealed on February 19, 2026.

The ongoing occupation, alleged asset looting, and unregulated extraction, the company argued, constitute a direct violation of those judicial directives.

Field assessments cited by the company indicate that approximately 13 groups, including foreign nationals, are conducting illegal mining (galamsey) operations on the concession in breach of Section 70 of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703).

Narawa estimates losses of roughly GHS 100 million in stolen gold concentrates and machinery, including six excavators, and more than US$2 million in destroyed plant infrastructure.

Because armed actors have blocked physical access to the site, the company stated it has been unable to carry out required environmental mitigation.

It has formally notified the Chief Inspector of Mines and the Environmental Protection Agency that statutory, civil, and environmental liabilities arising from land degradation now rest with the state agencies responsible for securing the site and with the illegal occupiers themselves.

Narawa confirmed that it has initiated High Court proceedings against private individuals, corporate trespassers, and allegedly complicit parties.

The company is seeking punitive damages for asset loss and business interference.

The statement concluded with a direct appeal to the government and security agencies to issue immediate written directives for the full evacuation of all unauthorised entities and the restoration of Narawa’s lawful operational boundaries.
