NPP Loyal Ladies, a group within the New Patriotic Party, has directed their efforts towards maternal mortality.
Maternal mortality refers to the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of the termination of pregnancy.
Speaking in an interview, Ms. Adwoa Pomaah Sanwu, a Vice President of the group, said statistics on maternal mortality have reached alarming proportions.
In 2015, UN-statistics estimated that 303,000 women lost their lives through complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
The Ministry of Health, in 2017, reported of 319 deaths per 100,000 live births, a sharp contrast to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals’ target of 70 per 100,000 live births.
According to Ms. Sanwu, “valuable lives are lost during child birth, and our reaction upon hearing such stories is, ‘…what a shame’. It is indeed a shame for a person bringing life into the world to lose her life in the process. This canker continues to rear its ugly head and, paradoxically, we have had our fair share of this rather unfortunate phenomenon, as we have lost about five members to maternal mortality.
“We believe that, the central government cannot tackle this alone, as it is financially constrained”.
This has formed the basis for their quest to join the fight to reduce, to the barest minimum, the menace of maternal mortality through public education and health screening for expectant mothers and newborns on the 21st of September, 2018, at the Kasoa Urban Council.
Eva Quartey and Florence Osei-Aboagye Kasoa Commanders of the NPP Loyal Ladies indicated that the NPP Loyal Ladies are committed to ensuring that the vulnerable in society, especially mothers and children are adequately catered for. They urged every resident within Kasoa and its environs to be part of this event.
