NPP Needs an Apology Tour, not a Thank You Tour – Prof. Samuel Adu Gyamfi

Political historian at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Professor Samuel Adu Gyamfi, has criticised the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing Thank You Tour, describing it as a misplaced priority in the wake of the party’s defeat in the 2024 general election.

According to him, the NPP should instead embark on an Apology Tour to address the deep-seated disappointment, frustration, and voter apathy among its grassroots supporters.

Speaking on Starr Today with Tutuwaa Danso, Prof. Adu Gyamfi argued that a significant number of NPP supporters abstained from voting in the 2024 polls due to economic hardship, unfulfilled promises, and disillusionment with the party’s leadership.

“What is fundamental about the so-called Thank You Tour the NPP is undertaking is that they are missing the point—fundamentally, they are missing it. This should have been an Apology Tour, not a Thank You Tour,” he said.

The NPP officially launched the Thank You Tour on April 23 at its national headquarters in Accra, with the party’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, leading the initiative. The tour, according to party officials, aims to express gratitude, promote party unity, and reorganise grassroots structures ahead of the 2028 elections.

Dr. Bawumia, at the launch, extended an olive branch to his former contenders in the party’s presidential primaries and stressed the importance of reconciliation, internal reorganisation, and strategic realignment.

He further noted that the tour was deliberately delayed to allow for the conclusion of the Mike Oquaye Committee’s internal review. The committee’s report provides recommendations for overhauling the party’s electoral strategy and addressing structural deficiencies that contributed to its defeat.

Nonetheless, Prof. Adu Gyamfi maintains that before the NPP can begin the process of rebuilding, it must first confront the underlying causes of its electoral loss and reconnect with disillusioned supporters through honest reflection and public accountability.
