Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine has confirmed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has engaged top-tier lawyers in the United States to contest his extradition to Ghana.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra, Dr. Ayine noted.
“I just got to know that he has hired some of the top lawyers in the United States of America, very experienced lawyers, to, I mean, defend him. Now, I’m not afraid at all. But it means that there’s going to be a fight in the federal courts in the U.S.”
The Attorney General emphasized that the extradition process will involve rigorous judicial review in the U.S., where Ofori-Atta has the right to contest the proceedings at the district court, circuit court, and even the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary.
Dr. Ayine reassured Ghanaians that despite the high-profile legal defense, the Ghanaian government has completed all requisite steps to secure Ofori-Atta’s return:
“On behalf of the government of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, we have taken the requisite steps to bring him to Ghana to face trial.”
Ofori-Atta, along with seven others, faces a 78-count case linked to controversial revenue assurance contracts awarded to Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML).
The eight accused, listed under charge sheet CR/0106/2026, include Ernest Darko Akore, Emmanuel Kofi Nti, Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, Isaac Crentsil, Col. (Rtd.) Kwadwo Damoah, Evans Adusei, and SML as a corporate entity.
The charges, filed by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), allege that the accused conspired to manipulate the procurement process to secure unfair advantages, contrary to Section 23(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), and Section 92(2)(b) of the Public Procurement Act, 2003 (Act 663).
