Police have arrested six suspects following a violent attack on New Winneba Township by a large mob on Monday, 1 September 2026, that left three people dead and 15 others injured.
According to a statement from the Public Affairs Unit of the Central Region Police Command, approximately 300 people from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze stormed the township at about 10:40 a.m.
Armed with guns, stones, cutlasses, and sticks, the group attacked residents, stores, and homes belonging to natives of the area, causing extensive property damage.
Fifteen injured victims, including a police officer, were taken to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba. Medical officers on duty confirmed that three people had died as a result of the assault.
According to the police statement, personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters, Agona Swedru Division and Mankessim Division, reinforced by the Inspector-General of Police’s special team and two armoured vehicles from National Headquarters, were deployed to the area to maintain peace.
During the operation, officers arrested six suspects: Kweku Kakraba, 52; Arko Thomas, 19; Samuel Tulasi, 19; Samuel Gyasi, 22; Emmanuel Okyere, 22; and Seth Osei, 22. A locally manufactured single-barrel gun and one empty AAA cartridge were recovered from the scene.
The statement which was signed by Chief Inspector, Isaac Evans Ettie of the Public Affairs Unit, Central Region continued that the police have established six snap checkpoints, intensified day and night patrols, and deployed officers from the Police Intelligence Department (PID) and Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to monitor the situation.
“The area is now calm and under control, the police said. All six suspects remain in custody and are assisting with investigations,” the statement said.
