A police officer has been charged with murder following the death of Central University law student Ivan Apprey Baidoo in a motorbike crash on the Tema Motorway.

General Corporal Robert Katey Koranteng was brought before the Adabraka District Court on September 15 over the incident, which occurred on August 27, 2026.

According to the prosecution, Baidoo was travelling on a Yango motorbike operated by Samuel Wesley Arthur when the rider allegedly jumped a red light at the UPSA intersection.

Koranteng, who was on duty at the time, allegedly pursued the motorbike through Okponglo and the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange onto the Tema Motorway.

The prosecution alleges that after the Old Tollbooth, the officer kicked the moving motorbike, causing it to veer off course and crash into a concrete barrier.

It is further alleged that Koranteng did not stop to assist the victims or arrange immediate medical attention before leaving the area.

Baidoo was subsequently taken to the Tema General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The rider survived and was discharged after treatment.

A September 3 postmortem examination found that Baidoo died from haemorrhagic shock resulting from blunt trauma to the chest and abdomen.

Koranteng has been charged under Section 46 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), with the CID Homicide Unit continuing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death.

Before the police identified and arrested Koranteng, Baidoo’s family had appealed to the public for information to help establish what happened on the Tema Motorway.

The family announced a GH¢50,000 reward for credible information leading to the arrest and successful prosecution of the person or persons responsible for the incident.

The family also urged eyewitnesses and anyone with information about the crash to come forward, assuring potential informants that their information would be treated with strict confidentiality.

The family subsequently petitioned the CID on September 7 for a full-scale investigation into Baidoo’s death.
