The Ghana Police Service has reminded members of the public of the prohibition of explosives in the country during the Christmas period.
It said the Executive Instrument (E.I) 21 of 1999 prohibits the manufacture, possession or carriage of any of the following categories of explosives.
They are fire crackers often known as knockouts, display of shells, artillery shells and ball as well as canister shells.
To ensure strict compliance with this provision, the police said personnel who would be deployed for special operations during the festive seasons would be tasked to arrest any person or group of persons who act contrary to the instrument, for prosecution.
A release issued in Accra Tuesday and signed by the Director-General of the Police Public Affairs Directorate, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr David Eklu, said the service, while entreating prospective importers and dealers in such explosives to refrain from importing and selling them, it was also calling on members of the general public to desist from purchasing, possessing or using them.
“Members of the public in possession of these prohibited explosives are therefore advised to deposit them with the Police Commander in charge the nearest Police Station or District.
“The Police Service is once again calling on the public to co-operate in checking and reducing incidents of crime during this Christmas and beyond,” the statement added.
