PNC General Secretary urges citizens to respect religious freedom and avoid attacks on different faiths.

The General Secretary for People’s National Convention (PNC), Awudu Ishaq has called for greater religious tolerance in Ghana, stressing the need for citizens to respect one another’s beliefs and avoid imposing their religious views on others.

Speaking with Lantam Papanko on Morning Starr, Awudu Ishaq said Ghana’s democratic gains must be accompanied by respect for religious freedom and tolerance, pointing to the country’s constitutional protection of religious rights and the work of institutions such as the National Peace Council.

According to him, people must understand that statements or actions that hurt one person can equally hurt another, and this should guide how citizens engage with one another.

He argued that religious freedom means people should be allowed to choose the faith they want without being compelled or oppressed.

Mr Awudu Ishaq said his own family reflects the religious diversity that exists in society, explaining that his mother was a Muslim while his brother was not a Muslim before marrying his father’s daughter, after which he converted to Islam.

Mr Awudu Ishaq said this demonstrates why people must be allowed to make their own choices regarding religion.

He also cautioned against the growing tendency to attack or publicly ridicule religious leaders, particularly on social media.

Mr Awudu Ishaq said disagreements over religious teachings should not create an atmosphere where one person considers their belief superior to another’s.

“Allow the people to judge and take a decision as to what they want to do in terms of religion,” he said.

He further questioned the conduct of security personnel when such incidents occur, particularly where people publicly confront religious figures during live social media broadcasts.

Mr Awudu Ishaq said such situations raise questions about the responsibility of security personnel to protect individuals from unwarranted intrusion.

He urged Ghanaians to promote tolerance, respect different religious beliefs and focus on building a united country despite their differences.
