The Digital Transport Workers Union has declared a sit-down strike beginning Thursday, 5 November 2026, urging drivers and couriers working with Uber, Bolt and Yango to withdraw their services in protest against what it describes as exploitative working conditions.
Greater Accra Regional Secretary Yakubu Muhammed said the action follows repeated unanswered petitions to the platforms.
The union is demanding a reduction in the 30–35 per cent commission deducted per trip, an end to penalties for rider-initiated cancellations and for declining long-distance pick-ups, mandatory Ghana Card verification for all passengers, and functional real-time emergency support.
In a statement, the union accused the platforms of extracting high commissions while drivers shoulder the full cost of fuel, vehicle maintenance, insurance and other operational expenses.
“Platform companies continue to strip away our hard-earned money…drivers and couriers bear 100 per cent of the national operational burden…we are working ourselves to the bone simply to enrich foreign platforms while slipping into deeper debts,” the statement said.
It further condemned “unfair penalties and algorithmic punishments” and called for stronger passenger verification measures.
“We prayed and petitioned, repeated for peace and negotiations, but our cries have fallen on deaf ears. We’ve been pushed to the wall. We have no choice but to fight for our own survival,” Muhammed added, appealing to members to support the industrial action.
The strike is expected to affect ride-hailing and delivery services across Greater Accra as the union presses for negotiations.
