The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Suhum, Lydia Sarah Ohenewa, together with the Member of Parliament for Suhum,Frank Asiedu Bekoe, has cut the sod for the construction of a new astroturf at the Suhum Anglican School.
The project is expected to be funded through the District Assemblies Common Fund, with the MP committing a portion of his share of the fund to support the development.
The sod-cutting ceremony comes two years after a similar ceremony was held at the same location in 2024 by the MP, but the project failed to materialise due to a lack of funding.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Suhum MCE Lydia Sarah Ohenewa assured residents that the latest project would be completed, stressing that the government had demonstrated its commitment to ensuring the timely release of the District Assemblies Common Fund to support development projects at the local level.
She said the astroturf would provide a much-needed recreational facility for residents of Suhum and create opportunities for young people to develop their sporting talents.
The MCE also announced plans for additional educational infrastructure projects in the municipality, including the construction of a Junior High School (JHS) classroom block at Ghananata School and a new public school block at Suhum New Town.
According to her, the new school at Suhum New Town would help improve access to education for children who currently have to walk several kilometres to neighbouring communities to attend school.
The Chief of Suhum, Osabarima Ayeh Kofi, expressed concern over the failure of the previous astroturf project after the 2024 sod-cutting ceremony.
He, however, expressed cautious optimism that the latest initiative would be completed, particularly following the MCE’s assurance that funding would be available and released on time.
The traditional leader urged stakeholders to ensure that the project moves beyond sod-cutting to actual construction and completion for the benefit of residents and the youth of Suhum.
