The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), representing staff at Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital in Mampong-Akuapem in the Eastern Region will embark on a peaceful demonstration today Friday, November 1, 2024, against rampant pedestrian knockdowns in front of the hospital.
The action of the staff has been triggered by the latest tragic death of a staff member who was crashed by a speeding vehicle in front of the hospital.
The demonstration, scheduled to take place this morning will proceed from the hospital entrance to the Center for Plant Medicine Research junction and back.
According to the GRNMA, the protest aims to draw attention to the “rampant knockdowns” of pedestrians, including hospital staff and clients, by speeding vehicles along the road in front of the hospital.
In a letter addressed to the Ghana Police Service in Mampong-Akuapem, the GRNMA stated, “We have no intention of disturbing the peace of the nation, but this is a peaceful walk to express our concerns.”
Association leaders, including Chairman Mathias Kwadjo Amegbe, Secretary Jonah Tagnuntiba Tilonimbe, and Treasurer Joyce Asamoabea Dua, are calling for the urgent installation of effective speed ramps on the stretch of road to prevent further tragedies by protecting both staff and the general public on this hazardous road stretch.
Checks on the road indicate that although some speed ramps were constructed years ago in front of the hospital, it has become ineffective to control speed by drivers.
