The Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini has bemoaned the extent of disdain meted out to new parliamentarians on the Minority side by MPs on the Majority divide of the lawmaking chamber.
According to the outspoken first time lawmaker, some members of the majority treat him and other colleagues as though they are not fit to be in the chamber.
“The 7th parliament has no seniors because we were all sworn in on the same day. Being a new comer in parliament does not make one less human, sometimes I am unable to explain why your presence and appearance annoys some others in the house.
“Some people on the Majority do not think some of us deserve to be in the house. We all campaigned and we were all voted into the house to represent the people of Ghana. Some people on the Majority side need to understand that nobody was sent to parliament as a result of mercy,” the former Radio Gold journalist told Francis Abban on Morning Starr Monday while explaining the verbal exchanges that ensued between him and the Education minister Mathew Opoku Prempeh in Parliament last week.
He said the education minister’s attack on him, moments after Mahama Ayariga apologized to the Speaker over his allegations of bribery were unprovoked and unwarranted.
“Hon. Opoku-Prempeh started calling me names and abusing me verbally for reasons best known to him…the 7th parliament has no seniors because we were all sworn in on the same day… I said nothing at all to Hon. Opoku-Prempeh to trigger that reaction from him”.
