President John Dramani Mahama has departed Accra for New York to lead Ghana’s delegation to the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80), scheduled from September 22 to 30, 2025.

This year’s General Assembly is being held under the global theme “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights.”

According to a statement signed by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, President Mahama will deliver Ghana’s national statement during the General Debate on Thursday, September 25, where he is listed as the 12th speaker of the day.

His appearance marks a historic moment, as he becomes the first Ghanaian President to return to the UNGA podium after an eight-year interval.

In his capacity as African Union (AU) Champion for Financial Institutions, President Mahama will also host two major side events.

The first, on September 24, will focus on Africa’s financial sovereignty, bringing together African leaders, Finance Ministers, AU representatives, and development partners to push for reforms in the global financial system and the establishment of AU financial institutions.

On September 25, Ghana will co-host another side event with Senegal to advance the AU’s campaign for Reparatory Justice for Africans and people of African descent.

Beyond his UN engagements, President Mahama will hold bilateral meetings with the UN Secretary-General, global leaders, and institutions including the Rockefeller Foundation.

He will also engage with the US-Africa Chamber of Commerce and make a historic visit to NASDAQ, where he is scheduled to ring the closing bell.

First Lady Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama, who is accompanying the President, will participate in side events organized by the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) and deliver the keynote address at a World Vision International prayer service dedicated to children worldwide.

The President’s delegation includes Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Executive Secretary Dr. Callistus Mahama, Special Aide and Presidential Advisor Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Deputy Chief of Staff Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

The rest are Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, and GIPC CEO Simon Madjie.

President Mahama and his delegation are expected to return to Ghana on September 30, 2025.
