President John Dramani Mahama has charged the newly sworn-in Constitutional Review Committee with the responsibility of ensuring meaningful constitutional reforms, emphasizing that their work will not be another stalled effort in Ghana’s history.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony on Thursday, January 30, President Mahama underscored the importance of their task, stating that the committee’s role extends beyond reviewing reports and recommending amendments—it is about shaping Ghana’s future.
“The task before you is critical. You are not just reviewing reports and proposing amendments, you are helping to shape the future of our dear nation, Ghana,” he said. “Your mandate is to carefully examine past recommendations, identify necessary changes, and create a clear roadmap that will finally lead to meaningful constitutional amendments.”
The President assured the committee that this process would not be in vain, stressing the government’s determination to see the reforms through to completion.
“This must not become another chapter in the history of unfulfilled reform efforts. It must be a turning point, a moment when Ghana moves decisively from discussion to action,” he asserted.
Highlighting the composition of the committee, President Mahama emphasized that members were selected based on integrity, expertise, and commitment to national progress, rather than political considerations.
“This exercise is not about any political party. It is about Ghana. It is about ensuring that our constitution reflects the values, hopes, and dreams of every Ghanaian, regardless of their background or affiliation,” he stated.
The President urged the committee to engage widely with citizens from all walks of life, ensuring that the revised constitution would be inclusive, trusted, and representative of the nation’s collective aspirations.
“This constitution must belong to all of us. It must inspire trust, it must unite us, and it must provide a framework for a more just, inclusive, and prosperous Ghana,” he concluded.
