President John Mahama has delivered a positive assessment of his government’s performance in its first 120 days, stating that a majority of the promises outlined in his administration’s social contract have been fulfilled.
In a national broadcast on May 7, he declared, “We made promises and we have delivered them,” as he detailed various milestones achieved during the early days of his tenure.
Among the accomplishments, the President noted that his ministerial appointments were completed within 14 days, and the team has since begun active service.
He also underscored efforts to maintain a streamlined government, stating, “I have appointed 56 ministers and deputies, the leanest so far in the 4th republic.”
He further announced the introduction of an updated ministerial code of conduct, with penalties for non-compliance.
Turning to the economy, President Mahama reported that key recommendations from the National Economic Dialogue have been implemented, citing improvements such as the strengthening of the Ghanaian cedi.
On the issue of the COVID-19 levy, which was expected to be removed, he clarified that its continuation is tied to the country’s ongoing agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), saying, “The COVID levy has intricate links with the IMF programme.”
