Criminologist Prof. Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah has urged the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP David Asante-Apeatu, to resuscitate public confidence in the service by bringing closure to pending cases of alleged police brutality of civilians.

COP Asante-Apeatu, who is a former Director of the Ghana Police Service Criminal Investigations Department (CID) was Wednesday named acting IGP by President Nana Akufo-Addo.

His naming comes immediately after the former IGP John Kudalor met the president to bid him farewell as he goes into retirement in February.

Speaking Thursday on the AM show on Multi TV, Prof. Attafuah noted that it was unfortunate and despicable that alleged brutalities suffered by civilians in the hands of the police are often not investigated.

“I think that the new IGP should invigorate public confidence in that institution by releasing quickly…the report on the police shooting of civilians,” said Prof. Attafuah.

That, according to him, would assure the public of the services’ professionalism.

The Director of the Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy, Prof. Henrietta Mensah-Bonsu welcomed the president’s appointment of COP Asante-Apeatu.

She said she was not in doubt that the acting IGP would bring his experience to bear in his new role and exhibit professionalism.

“I can count on him [COP Asante-Apeatu] to do a good job,” she told Accra-based Joy FM Thursday urging him to give attention to discipline and police accountability to the public.
