The Minister-designate for Communication, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has assured the Appointments Committee of Parliament that her legal tussle with Zain now Airtel Ghana, following her dismissal by Zain in 2009, will not affect her efficiency as the sector minister if she is approved.
Zain in 2009 terminated the contract of Mrs Owusu-Ekuful arguing that her appearances on radio as a political activist was embarrassing the company.
Answering a question on the issue Wednesday, the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West said she sued the company because she felt her rights to expression and association had been infringed upon.
She is the matter was a human interest case and “they have nothing to fear from me. The actors have changed, the company has changed, the nature of the case is personal and not professional and I’ll engage with them in a manner that is in the best interest of this country and I would assist them as a company to grow and so I don’t see any potential problems or conflicts, particularly if the moves to settle this matter out of court also comes to fruition sooner than later as I expect.”
When asked by the Minority leader who is also a ranking member of the committee, Haruna Iddrisu, if she would consider abandoning the court action for “rapporteur ma” to allow her to navigate well— she replied that: “I believe that may even not be necessary in view of the stage that negotiations have reached.”
