An assembly member of the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem Municipality of the Central region has been arrested  for engaging in open defecation at the Elmina beach.

Clarance Joseph of the Sabre Awene electoral area was among others arrested Thursday by the assembly task force that is enforcing the ban on open defecation .

The arrest, according to the assembly, shows their uncompromising stands in bringing an abrupt end to the menace, therefore preventing a potential disease outbreak .

The assembly also described as disappointing the fact that a law maker who was part  of the decision to enact a bye-law and subsequent prosecution of offenders ends up flouting the same law .

The suspect was recently  part of a delegation by the assembly that took part in a training program by waste company  Zoomlion which was aimed at equipping assembly members from the coastal areas to help clamp down on open defecation.

The rule of prosecution, the assembly told Starr News won’t to bent to favour him.

Already, some 40 people have been fined between GHC200 and GHC450 by the Elmina magistrate court for engaging in open defecation with one person suffering a jail term of 12 months for his inability to pay a Ghc450 fine imposed on him.

The assembly is also pushing for the assembly member to be kicked out of the local assembly to serve as deterrent to others .
