Beyonce’s dad reckons her music career has been boosted by her being a light skinned black woman.

He’s given an interview with Ebony magazine where he discusses his book Racism: From the Eyes of a Child.

He talks about his experiences of race growing up in the deep South and admits he thought his former wife and mum to Beyonce Tina Knowles Lawson was white when he first met her.

Mathew, who managed Beyonce’s career until 2011, was asked how colourism affects aspiring artists when they are looking for mainstream acceptance.

“When it comes to Black females, who are the people who get their music played on pop radio? Mariah Carey, Rihanna, the female rapper Nicki Minaj, my kids [Beyonce and Solange], and what do they all have in common?”

Reporter: “They’re all lighter skinned.”

“Do you think that’s an accident?”

“Of course not!”

“So you get it!”
