World Cup 2018: Pope Francis Hopes it Promotes Solidarity, Peace

Pope Francis said on Wednesday that he hoped that the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which kicks off in Russia on Thursday, would promote solidarity and peace.

“Let this important sport manifestation [the World Cup] become an occasion for meeting, dialogue and brotherhood between different cultures and religions, promoting solidarity and peace between nations,” Pope Francis said after a traditional general audience held in Vatican.

Pope Francis, who is a keen football fan, said he wanted to send his “cordial greetings” to the World Cup participants and organizers, and everyone who will follow the tournament.

Russia’s first-ever World Cup will last till July 15, with matches set to be held at 12 arenas in 11 cities.
