Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram Sam George says he is excusing himself from parliamentary duties over what he describes as a needless risk to Covid-19 since parliament does not deliberate on issues pertaining to curbing the menace.
The MP in a letter to the Speaker of Parliament noted however that he prepared to work if it has to do with protecting the citizens and putting the Executive in better stead to protect the republic.
The Deputy speakers of parliament, minority leader, and minority chief whip were copied in the letter dated Tuesday, March 24. 2020.
Excerpts of the letter read “these are not normal times. As such, I would be absenting myself from Parliament hence except there is matter relating to the Corona Virus which Parliament needs to lend support to the Executive. I would spend the time working with my District Directorate of Health to increase public sensitization in the Constituency. If Parliament has no business related to the Corona Virus, suspend sittings of the House until such a time when we are needed. Even as we pray to the LORD to protect our land.”
He further indicated “I am prepared to come to work every day from morning to night if it is about working with the Executive to deal with the pandemic at hand. I am prepared to go the extra mile if it is work that would protect the citizens and put the Executive in a better stead to protect the Republic..
“What I am not prepared to do Sir, is to take risk that is needless. I am not prepared to risk exposure to the virus by coming to Parliament everyday just to come and work on bills that are of no emergency nature and do not relate to the Corona Virus or to come sit and approve loans and one waivers for private business interests many of which are foreign. For once let us hate our priorities right.”
