The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, has rejected calls for President Akufo-Addo to apologise for his reply to the Chief of Aflao, Torgbui Adzonugaga Amenya Fiti on the E-Block.
Majority of Ghanaians have slammed President Akufo-Addo for claiming that the Aflao Chief can complete the E-Block started by President John Mahama if he was frustrated with the slow pace of work on the project.
Akufo-Addo’s response came after the Paramount Chief Torgbui Adzonugaga Amenya Fiti had given the government four months to complete the community day senior high school which had stalled since 2016.
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM, the President said most of the schools started by Mr Mahama have been completed by his government.
“Many of the E-blocks are being worked on across the country…Is he [Torgbui Adzonugaga Amenya Fiti] the one to give the minister ultimatum, then he should go ahead and complete the project,” he told host Kwami Sefa Kai.
Several Ghanaians have called on President Akufo-Addo to apologise to the chief for the condescending manner he responded to the Chief’s request.
But speaking on Starr Chat, Mr Buaben Asamoa said there is no need for the president to apologise because his comment was in jest. He added that President Akufo-Addo will not deliberately disrespect any Chief in Ghana, hence no need for an apology.
“This is not an arrogant posture. The president listens. Perhaps the questioner put it in a way that made it look like an ultimatum. I don’t think the president will insult a Chief on radio.
“I don’t think the president should apologize…I don’t think president Akufo Addo will deliberately denigrate a chief in public. That’s why I don’t think there’s a need for an apology.”
