The New Jersey District of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, USA, has reached out to support church members affected by the devastating floods in Mepe, a community in the Volta Region of Ghana.
Mepe became the focal point of an unprecedented flood disaster triggered by the spillage of water from the Akosombo and Kpong Hydroelectric Dams by the Volta River Authority (VRA) in October this year.
The entire community was submerged for weeks displacing thousands of residents.
Led by the New Jersey District Minister and Clerk of the North America and Australia Presbytery, Rev. Dr. Ransford K Awuku-Gyampoh, the delegation, accompanied by Catechist Peter Deku and Nana Agyemang (Senior Presbyter PCG Ascension – New Jersey), presented vital relief items in a short ceremony at Grace Congregation in Mile-50, Koforidua, to the Akuapem Presbytery on behalf of Dangme Tongue Presbytery.
The donated relief items aimed at supporting Mepe flood victims included four brand new motorbikes, bales of clothing, bags of rice, gallons of cooking oil, and packs of bottled and sachet water.
Expressing concern for the plight of the church members in Mepe, Rev. Dr. Ransford K Awuku-Gyampoh emphasized the church’s commitment to standing in solidarity with those affected by the floods, trusting that the relief items will provide some comfort in the short term.
He appealed to President H. E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to consider relocating the flood victims and prioritize the needs of students whose education has been disrupted.
“We believe that if they get a good place to live, especially students who, for this reason, cannot go to school, let us help these children and our parents. We must not deprive them of their lives for the sake of the future,” he added.
Rev. Ebenezer Acheampong Asiedu, Chairperson of the Akuapem Presbytery, received the donated items and highlighted their significance to the flood victims and the church at large.
He praised the New Jersey District team for their kind gesture, acknowledging that the relief items, especially clothing, would provide comfort to those who lost everything in the floods.
“When the flood occurs, many people lose everything, including their clothing, and so this is going to relieve them of having clothes to wear and to go to church and to work.”
The relief items donated by the New Jersey District of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana complement various relief interventions extended to flood victims in various districts of the Church through the outgoing moderator, Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante.
