Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, announced the introduction of e-gates at Kotoka International Airport by the end of the year.
Speaking at a meeting with clergy in Cape Coast at the start of his regional tour, Dr. Bawumia detailed the upcoming technological advancements aimed at streamlining immigration processes.
“In fact, before the end of this year, if you arrive in Ghana at Kotoka Airport, you don’t even need to go to an immigration officer. We are putting together the e-gates. You put your Ghana card, it will open for you, and you’ll pass and enter. The e-gates will come into work in Ghana before the end of this year. In Ghana, before the end of this year,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
This initiative is part of the government’s broader digital transformation agenda, enhancing efficiency and convenience for travelers entering the country.
The e-gates will utilize the Ghana Card, integrating it into the immigration process to allow seamless and automated entry for holders of the national identification card.
The introduction of e-gates is expected to reduce wait times, minimize human errors, and improve overall airport security.
This development aligns with global trends in airport management and is poised to position Ghana as a leader in adopting advanced border control technologies within the West African region.
Dr. Bawumia’s announcement was met with optimism by the clergy and other stakeholders, reflecting the administration’s commitment to leveraging technology for national development.
The Vice President’s regional tour is anticipated to include further discussions on infrastructural improvements and technological innovations across various sectors.
As the year progresses, all eyes will be on Kotoka International Airport to witness the implementation of this groundbreaking project, marking a new chapter in Ghana’s journey towards digitalization and modernization.
