Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa says the election management body will scrutinize nomination forms submitted by presidential hopefuls to ensure only eligible candidates are cleared to contest.

Madam Jean Mensa made this known when she spoke to the media ahead of the submission of presidential nomination forms by political party leaders and other interested individuals.

“As part of the Commission’s efforts to ensure a transparent, credible, and accountable process, the Commission has developed a detailed checklist that embodies the criteria to be satisfied by a presidential candidate as prescribed by law. The checklist will guide the scoring and awarding of marks by a team established by the Commission to scrutinize and review each nomination form submitted”, Mrs. Mensa stated.

She noted that the practice was not particularly new as far as the verification process was concerned.

“As in 2020, the Commission has established two teams which have been tasked to review all forms submitted. The technical team has been tasked to review forms to ensure that the presidential candidates meet the qualifications as set out by law,” she explained.

The IT team which she noted was the second, was charged with the “responsibility of scrutinizing the voter ID cards of presidential candidates and their supporters” in order to verify the status of these persons as registered voters.

Madam Jean Mensa said both teams had been given the required orientation to make them discharge their duties under the law.

She was confident that the process will be “transparent, fair and peaceful”.
