The Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Mark Oliver Kevor, has cautioned the government against underestimating the frustration of Ghana’s youth, warning that their discontent could lead to unrest during the upcoming December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections.
According to him, eight years of NPP government has led to high youth unemployment, unbridled corruption, state capture, family and friends governance, and severe economic hardship hence the youth action for change of government.
Addressing NDC supporters in Koforidua after a two-hour protest that concluded with the presentation of a petition to the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Kevor stated that the country’s peace should not be taken for granted.
“Nobody should underrate the peace of the country and think there cannot be unrest here. The youth are frustrated—whether you have a master’s, PhD, are a lawyer, engineer, or medical doctor—we are all at our wit’s end. No one is afraid of violence anymore. The government and the Electoral Commission must take this seriously. We don’t want to disappoint Ghanaians,” he said.
Dr. Kevor highlighted irregularities in the EC’s handling of the voters’ register, stating that about 250,000 voters have been transferred to different polling stations, causing confusion among voters. “For instance, you could be in Nkawkaw and told to vote in Wa, or you vote in Asuboi and then are asked to vote in Bolga. That’s exactly what the Electoral Commission has done,” he added.
He stressed that the NDC is now “wide awake and extra vigilant,” assuring supporters that the party would strictly monitor and expose any actions by the EC that could undermine the electoral process.
Dr. Kevor also dismissed fears of a military takeover, stating that the NDC would not be intimidated by threats of coups if they rise up to defend the Constitution. “We represent the people of Ghana who are furious about this poor governance. Many of us know much about coups, and nobody can frighten us with one.”
Meanwhile the National Youth Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Opare Addo, has called on key traditional leaders, including the Asantehene Otumfuor Osei Tutu, Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, and the National House of Chiefs, to intervene and ensure that the Electoral Commission (EC) conducts a free and fair election on December 7.
He warned that Ghana would not remain the same if the EC attempts to undermine the people’s will.
He continued “We are calling on Otumfuor, Osagyefuo Amoatia and all our distinguished chiefs that Ghana is for all of us. If we are looking for peace there is an antidote to a peaceful election it is called Justice , free and fair election must be conducted else this country will not remain the same. Nothing except the victory of NDC will be accepted by us because we know that all things be equal there is no way that change should not happen because change is coming “.
He also directed his message to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, reminding him of his responsibility to ensure peace.
He pointed out that when Akufo-Addo won the 2016 elections, then-President John Mahama handed over a peaceful nation, and he expects the same in 2025.
Opare Addo warned that the president must protect the lives of Ghanaians on December 7 to ensure his own peaceful retirement.
“Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo, Ideally he should remain a stateman. Akufo Addo when you won in 2016 John Mahama was the sitting President he handed over a peaceful country we urge you that hand over a peaceful country on the 7th of January 2025 to H.E John Dramani Mahama. Because you want to enjoy your retirement, and if you want to enjoy your retirement in peace then make sure no Ghanaian life is touched on 7th December. Make sure that as President the responsibility we have given you make sure that every single Ghanaian life is protected so your own life can also be protected when you retire”
