The flagbearer of the largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has criticized the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for creating new regions without ensuring adequate development.
Speaking during his two-day tour of the Ahafo Region, Mahama told the chiefs that the purpose of creating new regions was to bring development to the people.
Although Mr Mahama conceded that the erstwhile Brong Ahafo Region was demarcated into smaller regions because of its size, he argued that its major objective was yet to be realized.
“Not too long ago, the Brong Ahafo was divided into three regions. The essence of the demarcation was to accelerate development because, when you look at the Brong-Ahafo in its initial form, it was quite huge. Normally, development is seen in regional capitals; however, when they are divided into three, there will be three regions, which means development comes to the doorsteps of the people,” he said.
“When you look at the NPP government, they were merely interested in demarcation for the sake of it. They were not interested in providing infrastructure to the towns to befit the status of regional capitals,” he added.
He cited Goaso, the regional capital of the Ahafo Region, as a case in point, arguing that the town had barely seen any notable development.
Mr Mahama pledged that if elected, his administration would prioritize infrastructure projects in the newly created regions to enhance growth and improve the lives of residents.
The six towns that were elevated to regional capital status after the regional reorganization in 2019 are Goaso, Techiman, Sefwi-Wiawso, Dambai, Damongo, and Nalerigu.
