Former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye, has showered praise on Alban Bagbin, describing him as a deserving occupant of the Speaker’s chair.

In an interview on Starr Chat with Bola Ray, Prof. Oquaye expressed his admiration for Bagbin’s dedication to parliamentary service.

“He’s a good man who deserves where he is. He’s paid his dues,” Prof. Oquaye emphasized, highlighting Bagbin’s extensive experience in parliament since 1993. Bagbin’s tenure as Speaker of Parliament, according to Prof. Oquaye, is a testament to his hard work and commitment.

Prof. Oquaye revealed that he and Bagbin share a cordial relationship, with Bagbin affectionately referring to him as “his teacher.” This, he attributed to his role in teaching the first batch of parliamentarians, including Bagbin. “He calls me his teacher, graciously that’s all,” Prof. Oquaye noted.

When asked to rate Bagbin’s success, Prof. Oquaye modestly declined, stating, “Those ones are too direct. I wouldn’t want to start rating my successor. It would be unfortunate.” However, he acknowledged Bagbin’s wealth of experience, citing his involvement with the Parliamentary Service Board.

On Bagbin’s leadership, Prof. Oquaye commended his ability to draw from the experience of seasoned parliamentarians. “God being so good when Right Honourable Bagbin came into the office, he had the whole experience of the previous board,” he said.

Prof. Oquaye also addressed rumors about his health, saying, “Outside the situation being seen, they don’t matter, they don’t smell. I’m fine. No, no, no. Nothing like that happened.” He attributed his well-being to divine intervention, saying, “It’s only God.”
