The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has been adjudged the winner of the Innovation in Digital Currency Design for Financial Inclusion at the just-ended 2024 Payment, Innovation, and Technology Week held from 23 to 26 September 2024 in London.

In a press release, BoG explained that the event was organized by Currency Research with the sole aim of recognizing achievements and advancements in the global payments and technology industry.

According to BoG, the eCedi initiative was awarded due to the Bank’s compelling demonstration of the eCedi’s design elements, encompassing governance, accessibility, (online and offline), interoperability, and infrastructure with the potential to promote financial inclusion.

The award also recognized the BoG’s ecosystem engagement approach. This included the participation of Banks and payment service providers during the eCedi pilot, an eCedi Hackathon, which invited the public to demonstrate their innovative ideas using the eCedi, and a live trial experience of the eCedi during the 3iAfrica Summit where participants were able to make payments for goods and services at the 3iAfrica Summit Digital Village.
