The flagbearer of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Kofi Akpaloo has promised to provide direct financial support to citizens, including monthly child benefits and unemployment support when voted into power in the upcoming elections.
According to him, the policy aims to directly support families and reduce the rate of hardship in the country.
Speaking on the Natalie Fort Show on GHOne TV, he said if elected as president, every child under 18 years old in Ghana would receive a monthly child benefit of 500 Ghanaian cedis (GHS).
The child benefits will be paid monthly, specifically on the first Tuesday of every month, directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts.
“We are going to pay every child ₵500 if you have four kids, you’re going to get ₵2,000 every month. Every first Tuesday, it will drop in your account.”
Kofi Akpaloo further outlined plans for a nationwide unemployment benefits system. He mentioned that those who have never worked before or have not contributed to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SNIT), will receive a monthly income of 700 GHS. For those who have contributed to SNIT but are currently unemployed, the unemployment benefit will be based on the amount they have contributed to the scheme.
“And then when I become president, those who are unemployed, we’ll pay them unemployment benefits. Those who have never worked before, and have not contributed to SSNIT, they will get ₵700. But those who have contributed to SSNIT but are currently unemployed will be paid based on their contribution.”
He assured the public that the programs are financially viable, citing his personal experience in Europe where similar benefits were successfully implemented.
